Create an installation to help students consider the fragility of digital security.
Digital security is a very modern concept. In a collaborative project between myself and Matt Jefferies (matthewjefferies.com), we aimed to shed light on how exposed personal information can be online, by creating an interactive instalation at the Arts University Bournemouth.
We created a physical version of the digital 'cloud'.
Students were asked to submit key pieces of information about themselves that they give away every day; email address, frequently used passwords, phone number etc. Unsurprisingly, people were hesitant. The more data inputted into the cloud, the more submerged and inaccessible the information became.
Students information was left hanging in the university for one day, then destroyed. The students were left asking questions of the morality of security, or lack-there-of personal information online.
